Baker filing sports betting bill

Gov. Charlie Baker

Gov. Charlie Baker will file legislation Thursday to legalize sports betting in Massachusetts, according to two sources familiar with the effort.

If the governor and the Legislature can agree, the gambling expansion would make Massachusetts just the second state in New England to welcome betting on sports since the Supreme Court gave states the option last spring.

Eight states, including Rhode Island, currently have legal sports betting, while bills have either passed or been introduced in dozens of other states, according to ESPN.

The governor's decision to put his own marker down on the issue comes as Sen. Brendan Crighton of Lynn and Rep. Dan Cullinane of Boston have filed their own bills to legalize sports betting this session.
