Oxford laser manufacturer IPG photonics has expanded its board of directors to 10 to make room for the former CEO of a competitor.

Gregory Dougherty, the former CEO of California-based Oclaro, Inc., will serve on IPG’s board, as well as its audit committee and compensation committee.

Dougherty was the head of Oclaro from 2013 until its acquisition by California-based Lumentum in December for $1.8 billion in cash and stock.

Prior to Oclaro, Dougherty served as a director of photonics firm Avanex Corp., until that company merged with another to create Oclaro.

Dougherty joins the company as it looks to rebound from a 2018 where its stock price fell by about half.

In a statement, IPG CEO Valentin Gapontsev said Dougherty brings extensive industry experience to the company.

“Greg is a proven business leader, with unique operational and strategic knowledge in the laser and photonics industries, which will be invaluable to IPG as we continue grow and expand our product offerings,” Gapontsev said.
