American Girl to close Natick store

A two-story American Girl store at the Natick Mall — one of just 20 such stores nationwide — will close next month.

The store is due to close March 20, along with another American Girl store at the Mall of America in Minnesota. American Girl said the leases for both stores expire this quarter and the decision to close those locations was done to improve the overall health of the business.

The Wisconsin chain announced the closures Jan. 31.

The Natick Mall closure will affect 22 full- and part-time workers working at least 30 hours a week and another 51 workers who worked fewer hours than that.

American Girl opened the Natick store in November 2008. It includes a restaurant in addition to its well-known store with dolls and accessories.

The store's closure marks the latest notable coming-and-going for the Natick Mall. Sears announced last October it would close its mall location, which was already downsized. The second floor of the once two-story Sears is being turned into a Dave & Buster's. Brookstone has also closed its Natick location, and Gymboree will soon as well. An Apple store has been closed since May for an expansion.

Wegmans opened last April at a former two-story JCPenney location, followed by a Roots clothing store in June.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this story incorrectly said the Apple store would reopen in May.
