Worcester health insurer Fallon Health has joined a national alliance of health plans and provider groups as just the second member from Massachusetts.

Fallon announced Friday it joined the Alliance of Community Health Plans, whose members cover more than 21 million people across 34 states and the District of Columbia. Richard Burke, Fallon president and CEO, will serve on the alliance's board of directors.

The Washington, D.C. alliance has 23 member companies nationwide including Wellesley's Harvard Pilgrim Health Care. The group says its members work to improve affordability and quality of care, and to redesign primary care and payment systems.

Fallon serves more than 270,000 customers across Massachusetts.
