Personal care attendants across Massachusetts, including an estimated 3,000 in Worcester, have begun negotiating a new contract ahead of an expiration June 30.

The current contract covers 48,000 Massachusetts personal care attendants who are members of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, a union that has local headquarters in Quincy.

The last round of negotiations won these workers $15-an-hour wages and earned sick time, the 1199SEIU union said. Now, the union is pushing for an annual wage increase, retirement benefits, paid time off, and the strengthening of orientation and training programs and resources.

Personal care attendants, whose work often includes caring for seniors and those with disabilities, joined the 1199SEIU in 2008. In all, the union represents more than 56,000 healthcare workers throughout Massachusetts.
