Wyman-Gordon to consolidate operations to make room for WooSox

Wyman-Gordon is planning two new buildings totaling 21,600 square feet to consolidate its Canal District operations to make way for the planned Worcester Red Sox ballpark and related development.

The aerospace component manufacturing company filed the plans with the Planning Board in late February and is scheduled to discuss those plans Wednesday, just days after Boston developer Madison Downtown Holdings acquired more than 10 acres of Wyman-Gordon’s land for $6.1 million for the majority of the $240 overall project, which includes the ballpark and hundreds of thousands of square feet of development.

Madison is planning two hotels, apartments, retail and restaurant space in a project whose tax revenue is projected by the city to raise enough revenue to help pay back the city’s $101 million loan for the ballpark.

Wyman-Gordon’s proposed project is on the southernmost piece of land where Madison’s mixed-use development is proposed to be built. Plans for that project and the ballpark have not yet been made public.

An existing 1,800-square-foot office building will be demolished to make way for a two-story 12,000-square-foot office building and a 9,600-square-foot storage facility. Also planned is a 60-space parking lot.

In planning documents, Wyman-Gordon said the company was “required to consolidate operations” to a 6.1-acre parcel they retained as part of the sale for the ballpark project.

“We’re thrilled to officially close the sale and help this exciting revitalization project move forward,” Ronald Brooks, manager of property services and security at Wyman-Gordon Company, said in a statement Friday. “Wyman-Gordon has a rich history in Worcester, dating back to the 1800s, and it will be gratifying to see our property be reborn into a new centerpiece of the community. We’re confident this transaction will result in positive economic impact on the area for generations to come.”

Madison is still expected to convey adjacent land needed for the actual ballpark and a parking garage to the city, according to development agreements.
