Worcester girls addiction treatment center closes

Highland Grace House, a Worcester substance abuse treatment center for adolescent girls, has closed.
The 90-day residential program was funded by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and run by Community Healthlink, part of the UMass Memorial Health Care system. The center, which was voluntary and staffed around the clock, called itself the only such facility in the state.
The center, which was established in 2005 on Highland Street, was staffed to accommodate 15 girls between 13 and 17 years old. Services, according to the center, included individual and group therapy, school tutoring and participation in area activities, including at the Worcester Public Library, Worcester Art Museum, YWCA and elsewhere.
Community Healthlink said in a statement that Highland Grace House was at less than half of its capacity in recent years, consistent with what it says is an under-utilization of residential treatment programs. That made the program now financially sustainable, it said.
Other programs, including outpatient and in-home therapy, have become more common, the organization said.
