Two new Canal District restaurants are seeking to occupy empty spaces on Water Street in Worcester.

Ed Russo, owner of the Canal District restaurant Lock 50, is hoping for Worcester License Commission approval Thursday to open a new restaurant, Russo, at 65 Water St.

The location is the former home of the Canal Restaurant and Bar, which closed last year. The business last posted to its Facebook account in April 2018.

Russo could not immediately be reached for comment Tuesday. His business is asking the commission for alcohol and entertainment licenses for live music.

Down the street, an Indian restaurant plans to open in the space formerly occupied by restaurant and deli Kummerspeck.

Maa Chintapurnia, Inc., doing business as Om Indian Grill & Bar, is asking the commission for alcohol and entertainment licenses for live music at the 118-124 Water St. location.

Kummerspeck closed in October.
