Friendly's to close Holden, Framingham locations

Friendly's is closing its Holden and Framingham restaurants among 23 corporate-owned locations across the Northeast, according to reports Tuesday.

Three locations closing immediately are in Massachusetts, with others in Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire and New York. The company notified restaurants in a letter on Monday, according to copies of the letter and a list of closures posted by media outlets.

The Wilbraham company had nine Central Massachusetts locations, including those closing at 1060 Main St. in Holden and 27 Temple St. in Framingham. The others are in Auburn, Gardner, Leominster, Marlborough, Sturbridge, Webster and Worcester.

The Marlborough location, in the Apex Center of New England complex on Route 20, featured a novelty for the company: a drive-through. That location was the first new-construction Friendly's in Massachusetts since 2004.

The company, privately owned since 2007, sold its retail ice cream and manufacturing business in 2016 to Dean Foods Co., the Texas-based owner of Franklin dairy company Garelick Farms.
