Harrington Hospital has been designated a lung cancer screening center by the American College of Radiology.

The hospital announced the designation May 2, saying the classification recognizes facilities committed to practice safe, effective diagnostic care for individuals at the highest risk for lung cancer.

Harrington's lung cancer screening center was launched in 2015 at its Southbridge and Webster campuses with an aim to help high-risk patients, including current or former smokers and those aged 55 to 77. Screening involves CT scans to identify areas for concern.

The Lung Cancer Alliance has also certified the program as a screening center of excellence the past two years.

Harrington completed 1,144 scans in 2018, a 24% increase over 2017 and a 57% increase over the first full year of the program in 2016.
