Marlborough medical device company CardioFocus said a new atrial fibrillation treatment device can alleviate an irregular heartbeat.

The company announced the results of a study evaluating the HeartLight X3 System found it consistently achieved very rapid pulmonary vein isolation in as few as three minutes for a single vein.

The system is the company’s third generation atrial fibrillation system.

According to the company’ procedure times using the device were 90 minutes shorter than with the first generation of the device, and procedures can be completed in about an hour.

The device was granted CE Mark in March for approval in Europe and is not yet available in the U.S.

"CardioFocus is experiencing tremendous growth; more than 6,500 patients have been treated with our revolutionary HeartLight System and the HeartLight X3 System is poised to make a real impact on the AFib ablation space with its recent CE Mark approval," said Burke Barrett, president and chief operating officer at CardioFocus, in a statement.
