Central Mass. hospitals score high on safety

Hospitals in Worcester, Clinton, Framingham, Gardner and Milford have received the highest patient safety ratings in the newest report from a nonprofit hospital group.

Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester, UMass Memorial HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital, MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham, Heywood Hospital in Gardner and Milford Regional Medical Center all received A scores from the Leapfrog Group, a Washington, D.C., group ranking hospitals across the country twice a year.

UMass Memorial Medical Center's Memorial and University campuses in Worcester both received C grades. So did UMass Memorial's campuses in Leominster and Marlborough.

Leonard Morse Hospital in Natick, part of MetroWest Medical Center, received a B, as did Harrington Hospital in Southbridge.

The Leapfrog Group scores more then 2,600 hospitals based on publicly available data on prevention of medical errors, infections and other potential harms on patients.

Of 58 Massachusetts hospitals, 28 received A's, 16 got B's and 14 got C's.

How Central Massachusetts hospitals fared:

Heywood Hospital, Gardner: A. This is the third straight A rating for Heywood, and fifth in the past nine scoring periods.

MetroWest Medical Center, Framingham: A. The hospital got a B last fall, following four straight C's.

Milford Regional Medical Center: A. The hospital earned its second straight A after getting a C last spring following A's in five of the previous six reports.

Saint Vincent Hospital, Worcester: A. It's a return to form for the hospital, which scored a B last fall but previously seven straight A's.

UMass Memorial HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital Clinton campus: A. The hospital hadn't been rated in previous reports.

Leonard Morse Hospital, Natick: B. The hospital previously had two straight A's, with a previous mix of A and B scores.

Harrington Memorial Hospital, Southbridge: B. The hospital also got a B last fall and previously got six straight A's.

Marlborough Hospital: C. The hospital wasn't included in the spring 2018 ratings but received A's in four of the previous six cycles.

UMass Memorial HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital, Leominster: C. The hospital has now received four straight C scores, and six of its last eight scores.

UMass Memorial Medical Center - Memorial Campus, Worcester: C. The hospital got a B in the previous two reports, following C's in five of the previous six cycles.

UMass Memorial Medical Center - University Campus, Worcester: C. It's the second straight C, and eighth in the last nine ratings.
