A former Athol Savings Bank employee will serve one month in prison for stealing more than $100,000 from customer accounts.

Jessica Vargas, 35, an Athol resident, will also serve two years of probation after pleading guilty in February to one count of bank fraud and two counts of bank embezzlement, according to the U.S. Department of Justice office in Massachusetts.

According to prosecutors, Vargas, while employed as a teller, made unauthorized cash withdrawals from various customer accounts, including more than $53,000 from the account of an 84-year-old bank customer and nearly $13,000 from an 88-year-old customer.

Using video footage compared with the timing of the withdrawals, bank staff and police were able to determine Vargas withdrew $108,171 between August 2016 and December 2017.

She was arrested in March 2018 and indicted in July.
