40 new faces shine in the spotlight

09/01/08

Standing tall in Mechanics Hall’s Great Hall, which features an astounding ceiling with architectural detail and paintings, are five of this year’s winners. From left to right are: Jim Sullivan, president and CEO of JCSI; Allison Alaimo, director of finance and development for Massachusetts Veterans Inc.; Tara Hancock, associate director of alumni development for Worcester State College; Michael Covino, president of Block 5, Bocado and Mezcal restaurants; and Stacy Woods, division manager of Atlas Distributing. What does it take to make it to the top at a young age?

Just ask any one of the 40 individuals profiled within the pages of this very special annual publication of the Worcester Business Journal.

Leaders Among Us

For nine years now the WBJ has published its annual list of the region's up-and-coming executives. We seek out nominations from across Central Massachusetts looking for those individuals who, though early in their professional careers, have nonetheless shown every sign that they have what it takes to be leaders within their fields.

And this year's class is no exception.

Our honorees come from diverse fields and backgrounds. Some were born and raised in Worcester, while one was born in Egypt. The list includes leaders from the high-tech, education, nonprofit, consulting, legal and retail sectors.

As a group, they represent the future of the local economy and demonstrate the promise for the future. But don't take our word for it. You can learn more about each of our winners - including their career paths as well as their favorite movies - by reading their profiles on the following pages.

Picture Perfect

We gathered our Class of 2008 at Mechanics Hall on Main Street in Worcester. You'll find group photos of our winners against backdrops of the historical hall by clicking here.

Mechanics Hall is one of the finest historical buildings in Worcester. Built in 1857 by the Worcester County Mechanics Association, the facility is one of the world's finest concert halls. Thanks to its remarkable acoustics, the hall has hosted countless stars including everyone from Charles Dickens to Yo Yo Ma. Today, the hall - which was completely restored in 1977 - not only hosts musical and cultural events, but also business meetings, weddings and even dance recitals.

The hall's beauty is awe-inspiring, as evidenced by the photos you'll find on the following pages.

Special thanks to Robert Kennedy and his staff at the hall. They opened up their facility and helped make this issue special for this year's winners and our readers.

Thanks also to everyone at the Worcester Business Journal who made this special project possible and also to our panel of judges.

And finally, congratulations to the WBJ's 40 Under Forty Class of 2008. For this group, the best is surely yet to come.
