More than 1,000 volunteers from 60 area companies, schools and labor unions are expected to participate in the United Way of Central Massachusetts' 15th Day of Caring today.
The United Way said most of the volunteers will spend the day on more than 70 service projects including assisting nonprofit agencies, reading to children, painting a community center and picking vegetables on a farm.
The Day of Caring is intended to promote volunteerism and draw attention to local human service agencies.
The New England Patriots Cheerleaders will visit the volunteer sites throughout the morning and are expected to make an afternoon appearance at the College of the Holy Cross.
Local companies with large numbers of volunteers participating in the Day of Caring include Fallon Community Health Plan, Unum, Abbott Laboratories, Clark University, the Hanover Insurance Group and Anna Maria College, which is sending 259 volunteers.
