Court Stays Hair Removal Patent Suit

11/18/08

The U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts has stayed patent litigation brought against Wayland-based Candela Corp. by competitor Palomar Medical Technologies Inc. of Burlington.

The stay is intended to allow the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to reexamine the patents in question, which cover certain hair removal products. Palomar sued Candela for infringing upon the hair removal patents in 2006.

The cosmetic laser companies said the stay is the result of a request to reexamine the patents made by an anonymous third party.

Candela claims that it did not infringe upon Palomar's patents and that Palomar's hair removal patents were invalid anyway.
