Revenue in the worldwide server market reached $10.4 billion in the third quarter of 2009, which represents a decline of 17.3 percent year-over-year, according to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker.

The Framingham-based advisory company for the IT, telecommunications and consumer technology markets, said that while shipments declined 17.9 percent compared to last year, the results are an improvement over the 30.1 percent decline reported during the second quarter.

Third quarter server shipments increased by 12.4 percent compared to the previous quarter.

IBM led the industry with a 31.8 percent market share, followed closely by HP with 30.9 percent. Dell, Sun and Fujitsu rounded out the top five vendors with 13.5, 7.5 and 5.7 percent market share, respectively.
