Region’s Banks, Credit Unions Ranked Well

The Bauer Financial Inc. Statewide Bank Report rankings for 2009 have given 11 Central Massachusetts banks five stars, the report's highest ranking.

Among the five star banks are Commerce Bank in Worcester, Rollstone Bank & Trust of Fitchburg, North Brookfield Savings Bank and Middlesex Savings Bank in Natick.

No Central Massachusetts-based banks scored below Bauer's three-star "adequate" level. At two stars, banks are considered "problematic" by Bauer, which is based in Florida.

Central Massachusetts' credit unions made a similarly strong showing on the rankings with Allcom Credit Union of Worcester, as well as Grafton Suburban, Shrewsbury Federal, Southbridge and others scoring five stars.

Only one Central Mass. credit union, Millbury Federal, scored two stars.

Bauer uses financial information banks and credit unions submit to federal regulators to formulate its rankings.
