Grant Funds Barton Center Purchase Of Camp Joslin

08/31/10

The Oxford-based Barton Center for Diabetes Education has purchased Camp Joslin in Charlton with a $1.5 million grant and plans to make improvements to the camp.

The Barton Center has managed Camp Joslin since 2008 and also runs the nearby Clara Barton Camp. Both camps are for children with Type 1 diabetes.

In addition to a $1.5 million grant from the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust to fund the purchase of the camp, the Barton Center also received a $291,210 grant from the trust to help bring low-income children to the camp.

The nonprofit Barton Center also runs year-round education, recreation and support programs for children with Type 1 diabetes and their families.

The Joslin Center is a nonprofit diabetes research organization affiliated with Harvard Medical School.
