Kim McCarthy
Age: 38
Title: Founder/President
Company: Generations on the Move Inc.
Company location: Holden
Residence: Holden
Career highlights:
After staying home for more than nine years to raise our children, I decided I wanted to go back to work. I started Generations on the Move Inc. after recognizing the need in the marketplace for a company that provides relocation services that specifically cater to a generation in transition I also knew that I wanted to be able to make my own hours so that I could be home with my girls and help with homework and driving them to different activities. I came across an article in the Denver Post that featured people that assisted those 55+ in age through the relocation process. Then the light bulb went off in my head. What a great way to use my organizational skills and my love for working with the elderly.
Community involvement:
I help run the Wachusett Food Pantry located in Holden. My involvement started almost two years ago when I was looking to help teach my children how to give back to the community. Knowing that I am making a difference in someone’s life is very rewarding to me. Most importantly our organization at every step of the way is treating our recipients with compassion and kindness.
Dream job:
I think my ultimate dream job would be to own my own retail home décor primitive shop.
Businessperson you admire most:
Businessperson that I admire would be my stepfather, Jim Fox. While raising a family he put himself through college attending classes at night. He started his career at IBM and retired around five years ago as vice president of Asian operations. He then went and started his own company with 10 employees that currently employs more than 450 people. He has proven that with hard work and perseverance you can be successful.
If you weren’t doing the job you’re doing now, what would you do?
If I wasn’t helping seniors and their families downsize I would be a real estate agent. I love working with people to help find solutions. The quest of finding someone their “dream” house that they can call home would be very satisfying.
Favorite movie:
Don’t laugh but it’s “Grease.” I just love the music!
