With soccer fever once again set to sweep across America as the country plays host to the FIFA World Cup in 2026, Mazar is captaining a 20-year-long effort to turn Central Mass. into a powerhouse in the world’s most popular sport.
NEFC hosted four tournaments in the last year, bringing 2,000 youth teams to the region. With more than 5,400 players in its system ranging from ages 6-23, the organization has grown, expanding its reach across New England and securing 10 national titles across multiple leagues and tournaments in the process.
More important than the accumulating hardware NEFC has racked up in its trophy case, NEFC has built up the skills of numerous boys and girls, allowing them to obtain college athletic scholarships.
The organization has provided 170 needs-based scholarships to players who would not otherwise had the opportunity to play.
Hardly taking time for a water break, Mazar has pushed forward with NEFC’s growth, announcing in March the launch of a pre-professional men’s soccer team, which will play its home games in Worcester. Competing in the rapidly-growing United Soccer League system, the squad made up of NCAA athletes will be the highest-caliber team to call Central Massachusetts home in more than two decades.
