Wang leads WPI, a high-profile STEM-focused research university with a $631-million endowment. WPI is ranked No. 18 on U.S. News & World Report’s list of colleges with the best return on investment, and with more than 7,500 students from 48 states and 89 countries, WPI is the largest higher education institution in Central Massachusetts.
This year, WPI was designated an R1 institution by the American Council on Education and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, placing it in the ranks of the top-tier research institutions in the U.S. The college has expanded access to education, signing agreements with Quinsigamond Community College, Mount Wachusett Community College, and Middlesex Community College to guarantee admission to WPI for students who meet certain academic requirements.
Late last year, WPI purchased two hotels, with plans to convert them into student housing. After some back and forth with the City of Worcester, the two parties reached an agreement where WPI will continue to pay property and hotel taxes until the buildings are converted into student housing.
WPI’s technologies and spin-out companies have employed more than 400 people and raised about $1 billion in investment. WPI students collectively volunteer about 15,000 hours of community service every year.
