Biopharmaceutical firm AbbVie is planning an expansion of its presence in Worcester with the construction of a three-story, 55,211-square-foot building at its Research Drive campus.
Plans for the new building, submitted to the Worcester Planning Board on June 19, call for the construction of a building with warehouse space on the first floor, an employee cafeteria on the second floor, and general office space on the third floor. The site is located just west of AbbVie’s existing 457,100-square-foot building at 100 Research Drive.
The project will involve other site improvements, including the construction of outdoor patios, landscape improvements. A portion of Research Drive will be relocated to segregate pedestrian and truck traffic, according to plans filed by Boston-based engineering firm Langan on behalf of AbbVie.
AbbVie did not immediately respond to a request for comment on its Worcester expansion plans. The Worcester Guardian first reported the news of AbbVie’s expansion plans.
The existing Research Drive building occupied by AbbVie was first constructed in 1993. It was first occupied by German chemical producer BASF before Abbott Laboratories purchased BASG’s pharmaceuticals operations in 2001. AbbVie was spun off from Abbott Laboratories in 2013. Humira, an anti-inflammatory drug invented at the site, is one of the most prescribed drugs in the world.
The 29.9-acre parcel on which AbbVie’s existing building and the site of its expansion plans are located is owned by Worcester TC LLC, a Connecticut-based entity managed by Chris Halabi, founder of real estate investment firm Next Generation Net Lease Management. The site was given a 2025 tax assessment value of $82.8 million, according to City of Worcester property records.
Abbvie had 1,200 workers in Central Massachusetts in 2024, the last year it provided local employment data. This makes AbbVie the fifth largest life science firm in the region, according to data provided to the WBJ Research Department.
