Online retail giant Amazon announced today it plans to invest more than $40 million to create a new site in Westborough to house corporate offices, research and development labs and manufacturing space for Amazon Robotics.
The company anticipates this new 350,000-square-foot facility will create 200 jobs and open in 2021. The location will be in addition to Amazon Robotics’ current location in North Reading.
“This will be a world-class facility, where our teams can design, build, program, and ship our robots, all under the same roof. This expansion will allow us to continue to innovate quickly and improve delivery speed for customers around the world,” said Tye Brady, Amazon robotics’ chief technologist.
Amazon currently employs more than 4,000 people throughout Massachusetts.
The property at 50 Otis St. is being developed by Atlantic Management of Framingham and is the former site of AstraZeneca, with a distinctive glass pyramid. AstraZeneca closed the site, which once had 800 workers, in 2015.
Atlantic Management bought the 66-acre site in 2017 for $6.5 million. It was last assessed at $14 million.
