Amazon gave public officials and the media a look behind the scenes at its new 2.8-million-square-foot, $300-million robotics fulfillment center in Charlton on Tuesday.

Opened in November, the facility has more than 1,000 full-time employees and has approximately 32 million items in stock, ready to be shipped to customers across the region. The facility uses robotic drive units, which look like an oversized robotic vacuum cleaner but are capable of lifting up to 1,500 pounds, to move products around the facility.

Each floor of the five-level facility spans about 15 acres, equivalent to about 11 football fields.

“The impact that Amazon has had statewide is about 20,000 jobs, and that continues to grow,” Gov. Maura Healey said at the ribbon cutting event on Tuesday. “This technology shows [Massachusetts’] leadership in robotics, and that means faster delivery of goods for both sellers and buyers.”

Amazon agreed to a $10.2-million community agreement partnership with the Town of Charlton, which will help fund transportation infrastructure improvements, STEM education initiatives, and provide additional funding for public safety equipment and recreational facilities.

"This robotics fulfillment center reinforces Worcester County as a hub for innovation and creates economic momentum for our entire region," Timothy Murray, president and CEO of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce, said in a Tuesday press release regarding the new site. "This new facility creates career opportunities with excellent benefits and advancement potential, while also supporting over 9,000 independent Massachusetts sellers who use Amazon's store and logistics network to reach new markets."

Starting pay for associates at the site is $20.50 per hour. Workers in Charlton are eligible for funding of college tuition at colleges in Massachusetts and Connecticut, including Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester.

Construction began on the facility in March 2022, requiring the movement of 1.3 million cubic yards of earth and rock. The construction used 11,100 tons of steel and 75,000 cubic yards of concrete, the latter being provided by an on-site batch plant.
