Framingham clean tech firm Ameresco, Inc. announced on Thursday it has started commercial operations at a Houston landfill gas plant.

The Republic Services’ McCarty Road Landfill plant transfers landfill gas into renewable natural gas. Construction began in the second quarter of 2020 and faced construction and equipment delays related to the coronavirus pandemic and hurricane season.

The project partners with Republic Services, the second largest U.S. provider of non-hazardous solid waste collection and disposal, headquartered in Phoenix.

The project will reduce more than 61,000 tons of carbon dioxide from being emitted into the atmosphere, working toward Republic Services goal of reusing 50% more landfill gas by 2030, according to their website.
