Ascentria Care Alliance, one of the largest human service nonprofits in Central Massachusetts, is moving its headquarters from its location at 11 Shattuck St. to a larger space in Downtown Worcester.

The new 24,615-square-foot facility will be located at 18 Chestnut St. in a building owned by Commerce Associates of Worcester, part of a larger effort to establish the building as a nonprofit center. The new space will expand Ascentria’s capacity, improve accessibility, and allow for the nonprofit to be located near other mission-aligned organizations, according to a Sep. 12 press release announcing the move.

“As we continue to expand our portfolio of services, our current space no longer meets the needs of our staff and clients,” Angela Bovill, president and CEO of Ascentria, said in the press release. “Our new space will serve as a blank canvas to intentionally design a modern environment that supports the well-being of clients and staff, fostering dignity, safety, and engagement.”

The new headquarters have been dubbed The Lighthouse at Ascentria, a name the organization says symbolizes the space’s status as a beacon of hope and safe harbor. The space will include intake and clinical areas, family meeting rooms, classrooms, and a 100-person event space. The nonprofit expects the space to open in October.

“The new space allows us to increase direct services, deepen partnerships, and operate more sustainably,” April Kelly, chief of staff and vice president of real estate at Ascentria, said in the press release.

Ascentria is in the process of raising $950,000 through its Building a Future of Impact capital campaign to support its renovation and move.

Ascentria traces its roots back to a volunteer organization first based at a farm in West Roxbury in 1872. The organization has operated under several different names over the decades, including Lutheran Social Services of New England, according to its website.

The nonprofit provides services to refugees and immigrants, families and children in foster care, and those facing mental health challenges, among other services. In addition to Worcester, Ascentria has locations in Brockton, Waltham, and West Springfield, as well as Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont.

Ascentria has 469 employees and is the fourth-largest human services nonprofit in Central Massachusetts when ranked by total revenue, according to information provided to the WBJ Research Department.

Ascentria had $142.96 million in revenue in fiscal 2024, trailing Worcester-based Seven Hills Foundation and Affiliates ($466.26 million) as well as Advocates Inc. ($160.37 million) and South Middlesex Opportunity Council ($169.34 million), both of which are headquartered in Framingham.
