BJ's Wholesale Club stores in New England and metro New York contributed least to the Natick discounter's 15.9 percent May sales increase, the company said.
BJ's sales hit $824.3 million in May compared to $711 million during the same month last year. The company said same-store sales were up 13.4 percent, including a 6.6 percent increase in gasoline sales. In May 2007, BJ's reported same-store sales growth of 4.1 percent with a 1 percent contribution from gas sales.
The company said the southeast and upstate New York posted the greatest sales increases for May while metro New York and New England had the smallest increases. Sales of general merchandise were flat while food sales, especially perishable foods, increased by 11 percent.
