Graduate students at Clark University in Worcester voted 100 to 7 in favor of unionizing with Teamsters Union Local 170, according to social media posts from the student group on Tuesday.

Voting was open Tuesday and Wednesday, and the National Labor Review Board finalized the count Wednesday afternoon.

Clark graduate students, organized as Clark University Graduate Workers United, officially began their bid for union recognition on Feb. 9 in a letter to college administration. The group first began organizing in spring 2020 to address a healthcare premium hike.

CUGWU is unionizing with Teamsters 170, which is the fifth-largest union by membership in Central Massachusetts.

Now that the union vote is complete, the group will begin negotiating with the university on a contract.

“We are so excited to begin the bargaining process with [Clark University] to advocate for comprehensive benefits, fair stipends, and more,” the group wrote in a Twitter post.
