The site of Chuck’s Steakhouse and Margarita Grill Mexican Cantina, a business opened in Auburn in 1978, has been officially sold to the Town of Auburn so the site can be used to construct a new fire station.

The property, located at 10 Prospect St., was sold for $4.05 million in a deal finalized on Wednesday, according to Worcester District Registry of Deeds records. The sale capped off a process begun in November, when the Town’s Board of Selectmen unanimously supported a letter of intent to purchase the parcel.

In January, Auburn Town Meeting members voted 82-6 to approve the purchase of the property.

Chuck’s closed its doors for the final time on Feb. 24, according to the restaurant’s Facebook page. The steakhouse had originally been slated to move to a different location, but the owners elected to close the restaurant instead.

“The decision, albeit a difficult one, is a combination of where many of us on the leadership team find ourselves in life and where our next chapters’ aspirations lie both personally and professionally,” the post read.

Restaurant owners Steve Londregan and Thomas Flynn bought the restaurant in 1986 and the property in 2000. Both started working at the restaurant in 1979, while attending the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester.

The Town intends on constructing a three-story firehouse at the location, with room for a future three-story police station at the location as well, according to a presentation made by Auburn Fire Chief Stephen Coleman before the January Town Meeting vote. Coleman encouraged voters to approve the deal, arguing costs of building a new firehouse at a later date would be higher.

Will Kelleher and Madison O’Brien of Worcester real estate firm Kelleher Sadowsky represented both seller and buyer in the transaction.
