GWCF grants $1.6M to 19 nonprofits to improve food insecurity

The Greater Worcester Community Foundation awarded 19 community development block grants totaling more than $1.6 million for food security funding as part of its first round of funding for a program from the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development.

The grants are awarded to organizations who deal with food insecurity in the area and are used for supplies and equipment. The money comes from federal grants through the state, which has asked the foundation to find the appropriate partners to fund.

The majority of the organizations met a spring deadline for the grant eligibility, but because GWCF was not able to allocate all of the funds to those who used the spring application, the foundation engaged with additional nonprofits in the food security space to see if this grant program might be a match.

GWCF screened applicants for eligibility, including meeting the reporting requirements and the grant allocation timeline.

Of the 17 grants awarded, 13 went to Worcester organizations and the remaining four were awarded to groups in North Grafton, Westborough, Southbridge and Dudley.  These are reimbursement grants, so organizations make purchases and submit receipts to collect the money.

GWCF still has an additional $600,000 to award over the next few months.
