It's been a brutal year for retailers, but an annual "Holiday Survey" by Boston accounting firm Deloitte LLP has concluded that 49 percent of New Englanders plan to spend the same amount or more than they spent during the holidays last year.
Fifty-four percent of New England survey respondents said they expect the economy to improve in 2010. Last year, 26 percent said they expected the economy to improve in 2009.
Last year, 38 percent of New Englanders surveyed said they would spend the same amount or more than they spent during the 2007 holidays.
Deloitte said despite the improving trends, consumers plan to buy fewer gifts during the holidays this year and plan to spend less on them. New Englanders and American consumers in general are projected to spend more on non-gift items, such as socializing, entertaining and non-gift clothing and holiday furnishings.
