Maine engineering firm buys Auburn firm

Maine-based engineering firm Haley Ward Inc. continues to pursue its growth strategy with the acquisition of Lenard Engineering Inc., a multi-discipline engineering and environmental firm headquartered in Glastonbury, Conn., with offices in Auburn, Mass.

The latest acquisition now puts Haley Ward in four states — Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Florida.

In 2021, Haley Ward acquired the GeoEnvironmental division of cross-town partnering firm S.W. Cole Engineering and Whitman & Bingham Associates LLC, a surveying and civil engineering company in Leominster and Chelmsford, Mass.

In 2020, the Maine company, then called CES Inc., acquired Haley and Ward Inc. of Maynard, Mass. (In the midst of rebranding, CES shortly afterward changed its name to Haley Ward.)

Financial performance has grown an average of 18% annually over the last five years, and staff doubled to about 140 employees across its Maine, Massachusetts and Florida locations.

Acquisitions, a new COO position and other organizational changes are part of Haley Ward’s geographic and service line growth strategy.

Lenard’s locations appealed to Haley Ward’s New England growth strategy to expand its geographic reach, the firm’s president and CEO, Denis. St. Peter, said in a news release.

St. Peter said Lenard’s approach was the “right cultural fit” for Haley Ward.

“Their experienced employees add additional depth to our technical service lines expanding our reach to new clients,” he added.

Lenard will continue its name as a division of Haley Ward during a transition phase. Its three offices and 20 employees have joined Haley Ward, as have the firm’s four principals.

Lenard’s president, Mark Temple, will be a senior project manager in Haley Ward’s environmental service line. James Ericson will join the municipal infrastructure service Line as a senior project manager.

Todd Parsons will serve as a senior project manager in the land development service Line and David Battista will be a senior project manager in the municipal infrastructure service line.

The four expect “business as usual” on their end for serving clients across Connecticut and Massachusetts, said Temple.

Lenard brings a history of expansion of services and locations, said Haley Ward COO Travis Noyes. Its employees are expected to benefit from new professional opportunities brought by joining the larger Haley Ward firm.

Lenard provides services including civil and structural engineering, stormwater, dam and water resources engineering, water supply and wastewater engineering, hydrogeology, petroleum and environmental services, land surveying and construction engineering services.

Its clients include state agencies, municipalities and regional planning agencies, water utilities, commercial and industrial clients, oil companies, attorneys, developers and other design professionals.

Haley Ward is an employee-owned professional engineering, environmental and surveying consulting firm with approximately 160 employees in Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Florida.
