Marijuana growers organization expands

A group that advocates on behalf of Massachusetts cannabis growers is evolving to take on dual roles - lobbying, and organizing an active community of growers, a few years into legalization of marijuana and as the industry begins to mature.

The Massachusetts Grower Advocacy Council announced Thursday its plan to spin off its membership and community outreach activities into a new division to be called MassSense. MGAC will continue to act as the legislative and regulatory lobbying arm of the organization.

"As the emerging Massachusetts cannabis industry has begun to mature, it’s been fraught with growing pains for cultivators and manufacturers," the group said in the division's new website, MassSense.org.

MassSense will officially launch next month at MGAC's annual Harvest Cup event in Worcester, a cannabis competition and expo. While the lobbying arm continues to advocate for growers at the State House and before the Cannabis Control Commission, MassSense's role will be "to direct MGAC's efforts and enrich membership and the community as a whole," MGAC said.

The MGAC has been active as the Massachusetts legal marijuana industry has become a reality, particularly around the issue of host community agreements. The group has threatened to sue the CCC if it does not begin to review and regulate the statutorily-required agreements between marijuana businesses and their host towns.
