Marlborough-based Physicians Interactive (PI), which aims to make access to health information easier for doctors and health care professionals, has received a patent for one of its products.
The company's eSampling and eCouponing service -which allows doctors to browse, order and research drug samples from pharmaceutical companies online - now has received patent protection. The service aims to increase the variety of treatment options doctors have for their patients and make it easier to prescribe the correct therapy.
PI hopes to roll the service offering out among its network of about 2 million users internationally, including 450,000 health care workers in the United States, said Donato Tramuto, company CEO and vice chairman.
"As we embark on health care reform (as a society), we are bringing more and more patients into the health care system," Tramuto said. "Physicians are going to be overwhelmed with patients, so we need to give them the tools that are necessary to provide the best care they can."
Global Connections
PI's goal is to provide physicians and health care professionals real-time access to a variety of health care information. That includes patient specific information through the use of electronic health records, as well as general information about medicine. And it's all meant to be accessed on mobile devices.
Tramuto has a personal stake in the business: Part of the reason he was interested in starting the business in 2008 was because a member of his family had complications during childbirth related to medications.
Since then, the company has grown to assist not just doctors in the United States, but around the world. Some members of the PI team recently returned from a trip to Africa, where the company is helping to spread health care information.
Tramuto is hoping the company's now-patented sampling and voucher system will get even more doctors and health care professionals interested in the company's offerings.
In addition to the eSampling and eCouponing service, the company also has a guide to various drugs and medications on the market that registered users can access.
PI also has a directory of medical journals, writings and books which allow health care professionals to search and aggregate information about a specific medical condition from multiple sources into a single, easy-to-read format.
The company uses a combination of hardware and software services to distribute its products, but doctors can access the databases and research systems online or on their smartphones.
While the company has about 275 workers around the world, including offices in Illinois, Washington, New York and Mumbai, India, the company's headquarters are in Marlborough, where it has about 60 employees.
Tramuto said the company will continue to grow around its "epicenter" in MetroWest. He said in the next two years the size of the Marlborough facility could double, as the company consolidates offices into its headquarters.
"The talent we have here is remarkable, and we really don't want to displace or uproot that," he said of MetroWest. "This is a hub for health care and we want to be a part of it."
