Quabaug Corp., the North Brookfield-based manufacturer of Vibram shoe soles, has teamed up with a well-known manufacturer of fishermen's wading boots to reduce the spread of invasive aquatic plant species.
Simms Fishing Products of Bozeman, Mont. wants to do away with its traditional felt wading boot soles by 2010. The company teamed up with Italy-based Vibram and Quabaug, Vibram's North American manufacturer, to develop a rubber sole that provides fishermen with adequate traction but is easy to clean and doesn't allow potentially invasive plant matter to stick.
The boots that feature the new Vibram Stream Tread soles will also use less exposed stitching and fewer ridges and pockets to cut down on the potential for fishermen to bring invasive plant species from one body of water to another.
Along with Vibram soles, the 300 employees at Quabaug make rubber pet products and rubber surfacing.
