New Worcester County coronavirus cases ticked upward this week

Worcester County had a reported 195 new coronavirus cases and seven deaths in the week ending Wednesday, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

That weekly total is a slight uptick for the past month but below a relative spike reported for a few weeks in late July and early August.

New cases in the county increase the total to 14,418 since the pandemic began.

Statewide, cases increased by 1,970, bringing the total to 129,728. This is a decline from last week’s 2,341 cases, and the week prior’s 2,007.

Fatalities in Worcester County increase the total to 1,062. Throughout Massachusetts, there were 84 new deaths in the past week, bringing the total to 8,973.

The City of Worcester didn’t provide its weekly coronavirus case numbers on Thursday. Last week, it reported 98 new coronavirus cases, its highest number since early June.

UMass Memorial Health Care and Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester reported a total 22 inpatients with coronavirus on Wednesday, with six in intensive care.

MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham and Natick reported eight inpatient cases and three in the ICU. HealthAlliance in Leominster reported six inpatient cases.

Nationally, there are now close to 6.4 million coronavirus cases since the pandemic and 191,803 fatalities, according to Johns Hopkins University in Maryland. Globally, cases have now reached over 28.2 million, with 910,292 deaths. 

A note on the coronavirus figures

State and Worcester County cases and deaths are weekly as of each Wednesday. City of Worcester numbers are weekly as of each Thursday. The state began adding probable cases and deaths to confirmed ones beginning June 1. Worcester County’s case total included confirmed and suspected cases through Aug. 12, after which it includes only confirmed cases. Worcester County’s death total was revised downward by four on June 30, and is an estimate based on state-reported totals through early August, and estimated numbers from that point forward based on most recent two-week reporting. The City of Worcester retroactively added cases on June 4. State and county data is according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and Worcester data is according to the City of Worcester.
