Good design makes a strong impression

An array of colors, fabrics, textures and patterns line the office of Nikki Goodnow Interiors, where ideas are brought to life and created to attract clients. Contemporary or modern, traditional or old world, the image Nikki creates plays an important role in customer satisfaction from the beginning stages of a project to the final result.

Connection is key as Nikki describes, "First impressions are important in the message that is sent to your client base. You want to connect and make the client feel you understand their needs and can create the look they want and have the expertise to do so."

For the past 17 years Nikki Goodnow has been creating favorable first impressions and designing spaces in the residential and commercial community throughout Massachusetts. Her projects range from kitchen and bedroom renovations to entire office buildings.

One of her recent accomplishments was the interior design of Emuge Corporation’s new headquarters. This German manufacturing company wanted a contemporary look to project the image of their state of the art production. Goodnow and her assistant, Deborah Sargent, gave the 21,000 square foot facility a modern feel with their choice of fabrics and wall coverings accented by stainless steel and aluminum.

"The color scheme was hatched out of a carpet sample we all loved," Goodnow explains. The palette included shades of charcoal and platinum gray, plums and natural maple wood elements. The conference room boasts a large maple table and custom built-ins with frosted glass aluminum doors, which compliment the rich tones of the carpet and soothing walls.

Artwork punctuates each room enhancing and highlighting the color scheme. The overall feel is European and forward in its design. Nikki muses at the outcome, "It was an exciting project to be involved with, and even more gratifying to hear people say what a great European look it has."

Goodnow’s expertise does not stop at great color selection. Another corporate client reaped the benefit of Nikki’s design ingenuity with the showroom display she designed: slatted walls with Lucite shelving and a twist on track lighting to illuminate the products. "The colors of the containers and their arrangement made them works of art," Nikki explains. "The containers were grouped by color and placed at different heights with the conference table in the center of room surrounded by the product."

Great connections lead to more great work. The owner of this company asked Nikki to work on his home, a project that has now extended to his vacation homes. "We listen to our clients and try to get to know their likes and dislikes, wants and needs. You want to impart good design but not take away from the client’s personality. People hire me for my expertise. If something is wrong for a room, I’ll let them know and why."

Goodnow’s expertise comes from many years in the business, plus a degree in art and design. She shares her office space with her husband’s contracting firm, Phoenix Contracting & Renovations, and her daughter’s company, Chilmark Architectural Woodworking. This arrangement gives her clients links to services beyond design.

Among the many services Goodnow offers: space planning, color and finish consultations, architectural and custom lighting, furnishing layout plans, selection and specification of furnishings, installation site coordination, finish selection, artwork and accessory selection, and AutoCAD drawings

Noting current trends in design, Goodnow says she has been able to be more versatile in her design, using commercial grade products even in residential settings. "The quality is more durable and the assortment of materials is amazing."

Goodnow’s personal style leans towards contemporary. However, a vast majority of her clients are traditional or a mix of both. Her portfolio boasts an impressive mixture of design elements and settings. "We take a practical approach and present a design that’s livable and enjoyable.

So overrated. Nikki has a dated touch and overcharges for items that could be acquired at Overstock ?
