NStar Proposes Efficiency Program Expansion

Boston-based natural gas and electricity utility NStar has proposed expanding its energy efficiency programs for homes and businesses to $74 million next year.

The investor-owned company proposed to increase its efficiency program from $50 million in an application filed with the state Department of Public Utilities. The company said the increase is a "direct response" to the state's Green Communities Act, which calls for increased conservation.

NStar said the funding would expand its efficiency program for small business as well as its home heating loan program, lighting rebates and its home energy audit program, including "significant" increases to its insulation rebates. The company said it would also expand its programs for low-income customers.

NStar provides electricity and natural gas to 1.4 million customers in Eastern and Central Massachusetts.
