Oxford Immunotec, based out of Marlborough and Oxford, United Kingdom, announced on Tuesday the release of its T-SPOT Discovery SARS-CoV-2 test kit, which the company said could help researchers further understand how immunity to the coronavirus works.

The test, which is currently for research only, will allow researchers to measure the strength of a person’s T cell response to COVID-19, the company said.

“Not everyone with COVID-19 infection has detectable antibodies in serology tests, and this may be a bigger problem in the majority who experience only mild or no symptoms,” said Phill Keefe, senior vice president of product design, development and delivery at Oxford Immunotec, in a statement. “Also, it is not yet clear whether the presence of antibodies confers immunity. T cell responses develop before antibody generation and can independently provide protection, so studying T cells could give us new insights into immunity to COVID-19.”

The T-SPOT technology is already approved for clinical use to detect tuberculosis infections, the company said.
