Quinsigamond Community College’s Future Focus program has received a $450,000 Adult Education Transition to Community College Grant from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, the school announced on Monday.

The money will be distributed in $150,000 installments over the next three years and represents the maximum award allowed through the grant program, the Worcester school said.

QCC’s Future Focus program, founded in 2010 is designed for adult learners the college describes as nontraditional students. These students come from a variety of backgrounds, according to the school. Some have GEDs, others are English as a Second Language participants. Nontraditional students may also have completed high school and gone straight into the workforce without further formal education, according to QCC.

Those who are in the program receive additional support intended to help them get through higher education. The program covers tuition, fees, books, school supplies, some transportation help as needed, as well as career and academic advising.

“Those in our community who are under-represented and under-served have benefited greatly from our Future Focus program,” said QCC President Luis Pedraja, in a press release. “Increasing the award amount will enable us to assist more people in their quest for a better future.”
