DetraPel, a Framingham-based chemical manufacturer once featured on the entrepreneur-focused TV show “Shark Tank”, is relocating its headquarters to Charlotte, North Carolina.

DetraPel, which specializes in the manufacturing of PFAS-free and fluorine-free protective coatings, is opening a 40,000-square-foot facility in North Carolina, intending to bring that total up to 70,000 feet by 2027.

With the company conducting nearly 70% of its domestic business in the southeastern U.S., DetraPel settled on Charlotte to headquarter its expansion due to the city’s closeness to key markets and its strong manufacturing infrastructure and workforce, according to a February press release from DetraPel.

“This new facility allows us to not only scale production of our high-performance barrier coatings for textiles and packaging but also apply them directly. Additionally, we are broadening our scope to include OTC and cosmetic product manufacturing, further reinforcing our commitment to safer, more environmentally responsible solutions,” David Zamarin, CEO of DetraPel, said in the release.

Zamarin was named one of WBJ’s 40 Under Forty winners in 2021 while the company won the Rising Star award that year from WBJ’s Manufacturing Excellence Awards.

The manufacturer’s new site will enable DetraPel to produce 90,000 gallons of coating a day, a figure triple that of the company’s current capacity. The facility will be certified by federal agencies, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, along with regulatory bodies such as the current good manufacturing practice regulations.

Construction of DetraPel’s new warehouse is near completion, and the company has plans for a tentative ribbon-cutting ceremony later this fall, Emma Bulakites, marketing communications lead at DetraPel, wrote to WBJ in an email.

DetraPel was featured on the ABC investment show “Shark Tank” in 2018. The company secured an investment with Mark Cuban and Lori Greiner, though the deal ultimately didn’t come to fruition.

Founded in 2013, DetraPel manufactures protective coating for industries including food packaging, healthcare, beauty, over-the-counter pharmaceuticals, and electronics, according to the release.

CORRECTION: A previous version of this article said DetraPel intends to expand its new facility to 47,000 square feet, it in fact intends to expand it to 70,000 square feet.
