Survey: Students Should Pursue Computer Careers

Students entering college in the coming weeks should consider pursuing degrees in engineering, computer science or health care, according to a Challenger, Gray & Christmas survey of human resources executives.

The 150 executives surveyed agreed that students may want to avoid degrees in law, marketing and human resources.

Christmas, an international outplacement firm, said the fields recommended by survey respondents offer the flexibility to pursue careers in a wide range of fields.

The most recommended course of study was computer science/information technology, which barely edged out engineering. Respondents were asked to choose one of 11 fields provided.

Fields that were least recommended to college freshman were law and public service jobs, such as government or nonprofit work.
