Renee Diaz, founder of popular Worcester bakery The Queen’s Cups, is side-stepping into party planning, launching a second business aimed at organizing and coordinating smaller, more intimate events.

Renee Diaz

Diazsta Designs -- a play on her last name and the Spanish word fiesta -- celebrated a soft launch last August, although the company’s website officially went live this week. Bookings for weddings and other smaller gatherings are already trickling in, she said.

“It’s been so long since I’ve had that fire in my belly, like I don’t want to sleep because I want to be up working,” Diaz said Friday morning.

Diaz was inspired to start Diazsta because of what she described as a life-long love of party planning and hosting, and further spurred to action by the need for smaller events in the face of the coronavirus pandemic. Describing The Queen’s Cups as her baby, which she will continue to run, she said she was ready for a new project, and especially for one not entirely centered around food service.

Diaz founded The Queen's Cups in 2012 in Millbury, moving the business to Worcester in 2017. While she toyed around with opening a second bakery location, or even a cafe, Diaz said the event planning industry was calling her.

“It’s something that I’ve always loved,” Diaz said. “I remember being little and loving parties and hosting and details like that. And even when I was younger, and got my first apartment, I’d have parties all the time and have a theme for them and think about it meticulously.”

As it stands, Diaz is the sole Diazsta employee, although she’s working closely with a small team of close friends and family as the business gets off the ground.

“Things may have changed but I have pivoted my mind to understand that through everything that surrounds us, what has remained the most important is the love we have for our friends and family,” Diaz said in a letter to clients, on the Diazsta website. “Gone are the days of inviting people to a special occasion because we felt we had to. What is going to stay is the love for small celebrations and making them as special as possible.”
