'Tis The Season For Empty Offices

Even the hardest-working among us are likely to take some time off around the major winter holidays.

According to a new survey sponsored by The Workforce Institute at Kronos Inc. of Chelmsford, most full-time employees plan to take time off in December.

With both Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve falling on Mondays, more than half of the workforce will be out of the office both days. Many employers actually count the days as holidays, 49 percent for Dec. 24 and 36 percent for Dec. 31.

Eighteen percent of survey respondents said their companies close down entirely for the week between Christmas and New Year's.

Aside from wanting to spend time with friends and family, some workers take days off because otherwise they would lose the paid time off at the end of the year under company policies.

The survey was conducted by Harris Interactive and included 2,949 U.S. adults, including 972 full-time employees.
