Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, located in Grafton, received a $2 million grant from the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center to launch a shared resource for pathology and genomics research, according to a Friday release from TuftsNow.

The Comparative Pathology and Genomics Shared Resource not only helps researchers understand the pathology of infectious diseases in animals, but will also lead to improvements in the treatment and prevention of diseases in humans, said the announcement.

The new resource is part of a long-term project and will be housed in the newly renovated Amelia Peabody Pavilion, a 7,500-square-foot lab space constructed in 2020. It includes multiplexed immunofluorescence imaging to study tissue samples, Next-Generation Sequencing, and Nanostring Technology.

“When fully operational, this resource … will help to grow collaborative opportunities among regional academic and industry entities; provide training opportunities for students, fellows, scientists and clinicians; and ultimately support job growth through expansion of the research enterprise in Central Massachusetts,” said Cheryl London, a veterinary oncologist at the school, in a statement.

The Massachusetts Life Sciences Center is a Waltham-based state agency investing in the state’s life sciences initiatives.
