UMass Memorial Health Care has hired a new vice president to oversee diversity and inclusion, a new position at the Worcester-based hospital system that's the largest employer in Central Massachusetts.
Brian Gibbs will start later this month as vice president and chief diversity, equity and inclusion officer. He has held similar roles at other health systems and colleges.
Gibbs joins UMass Memorial from Oregon Health & Science University, where he was responsible for diversity initiatives in the university's clinical, educational, and research work, and served as an associate professor in a graduate community health program.
Gibbs has done similar work at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Maryland, the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and Florida A&M University. He co-founded Cherishing Our Hearts and Souls, a community-based coalition representing over 200 organizations in Boston's Roxbury neighborhood.
