Following a brief hiatus when Central Massachusetts saw a dip in unemployment, rates were back on the rise for the second month in a row in June.

The Greater Worcester metro area experienced the smallest unemployment rate increase in Central Massachusetts where the unemployment rate sat at 3.9% in June, up 0.1 percentage point from May. June’s rate reflected a 0.4 percentage point increase from 3.5% in June 2023.

Greater Framingham saw the lowest unemployment rate in Central Massachusetts with 3.6% of the workforce unemployed in June. June’s rate was 0.3 percentage points higher than in May and 0.6 percentage points higher than in June 2023.

Unemployment in the Leominster-Gardner region increased by 0.3 percentage points to reach 4.4% in June. The region had the highest unemployment increase over-the-year in Central Massachusetts, with its unemployment rate rising by 0.7 percentage points from June 2023’s rate of 3.7%.

Experiencing the largest over-the-month increase in unemployment in Central Massachusetts was the Athol region, which saw its unemployment rate rise by 0.5 percentage points from 3.9% in May to 4.4% in June. Yet, the Athol region saw the smallest increase over-the-year with its unemployment rate rising 0.2 percentage points from June 2023.

The Athol and Leominster-Gardner regions were the only in Central Massachusetts to surpass the state’s unemployment rate of 4.0% and the nationwide rate of 4.3%.
