Once again, UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester has been ranked one of the top five hospitals in Massachusetts by the U.S. News & World Report.
UMMC was named fifth on the U.S. News’ 2024-2025 Best Hospitals in Massachusetts and named best in Worcester, according to the publication’s report released Tuesday. UMMC was the sole facility in Central Massachusetts to make the state’s top 10 list.
“We are proud to be recognized as the top hospital in Worcester and among the best in Massachusetts by U.S. News & World Report. This distinction reflects the incredible dedication of our caregivers and the exceptional care they provide every day. We remain committed to delivering high-quality, compassionate care to every patient who enters our doors,” Dr. Eric Dickson, president and CEO of UMMC’s parent organization UMass Memorial Health in Worcester, said in an email to WBJ.
The only other hospital in the region to rank on the statewide list was Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester, which ranked 11th in the state and second in the city.
“The 2025-2026 U.S. News Best Hospitals rankings and ratings highlight the exceptional medical centers available to the Worcester community, with UMass Memorial Medical Center earning the distinction of the highest-ranking hospital in the region and No. 5 in Massachusetts,” Chelsey Wen, senior health data analyst at U.S. News, said in an email to WBJ.
As the region’s largest hospital, the medical center operates 826 licensed beds and generated $2.89 billion in revenue in 2024. The hospital employs 9,024, including 3,227 registered nurses and 1,256 active physicians, according to data provided to WBJ’s Research Department.
UMMC received a three out of five-star rating on its patient experience score, which was part of U.S. News’ Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems survey based on results between April 2023 and March 2024.
Eighty-six percent of respondents expressed satisfaction with their overall hospital stay and discharge, a figure slightly below the nation’s average of 88% and the state’s average of 87%.
Similarly, 87% of respondents reported a willingness to recommend the hospital to others, a score on par with the nation’s average and slightly above the state’s 86% average.
The hospital’s highest score on the survey was among its patients’ satisfaction with their nurses’ communication with patients, with 91% of respondents reporting satisfaction with their nurses’ explaining and listening skills and the respect they showed for their patients. UMMC’s 91% was exactly the same as the nation's and state’s average.
Conversely, UMMC scored the lowest on its respondents’ satisfaction with noise volume, with 72% of survey takers reporting quietness during their hospital experience, a figure 10 percentage point lower than the nation’s average and four below the state’s average of 76%.
Outside of patient experience, UMMC received 18 high performing designations, which U.S. News conferred based on data pulled from sources such as Medicaid.
“Its recognition as high performing in 18 procedures and conditions, including areas like back surgery (spinal fusion), colon cancer surgery, and pacemaker implantation, demonstrates a broad commitment to excellent patient outcomes across a wide spectrum of care,” said Wen.
No Central Massachusetts hospital made it onto the U.S. News’ honor role for 2024-2025, a list of the 20 best hospitals throughout the country.
