Verizon fiber-optic cable hits Hopkinton

Hopkinton has become the latest town to approve a cable-TV franchise to Verizon, bringing the number of Massachusetts communities with access to Verizon's FiOS TV service to 22.

The Board of Selectmen in Hopkinton voted unanimously to approve the service, which will be made available to 4,500 households.  The franchise agreement includes benefits to the town, such as insurance, indemnification and enforcement protections.  Currently, Verizon is in negotiations with 30 other Massachusetts towns to install the fiber-optic cable TV network, which promises higher quality through an all-digital, fiber network.

Verizon's FiOS service is currently available in Acton and Boxboro, among several other Eastern Mass. towns.
